A private pool villa near Laguna on Phuket's west coast, minutes from Bang Tao Beach. Check-in 3 PM, checkout noon.

No shrimp, prawns, crab, lobster or any shellfish. No kapi (shrimp paste) or dried shrimp. No oyster sauce (mushroom oyster sauce is fine). Fish sauce only if shrimp-free. Clean pans and utensils every time. It's in the notes at every hotel and villa, and with the chef. Carry the epinephrine pen on every flight and outing.

Sunday Walking Street (Dec 20) on Ratchadamnoen: silver, textiles, lanterns. Bo Sang & San Kamphaeng umbrella and silk villages. Baan Kang Wat artist village and Nimman boutiques. Out of town: Doi Suthep at sunrise, an ethical elephant sanctuary half-day, and Lanna cooking at the villa.

Phuket Old Town Sino-Portuguese shophouses and the Sunday market on Thalang Road (Jan 3 morning, before checkout), Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket near the villa. Private longtail or speedboat to Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, a day to Phi Phi, and the Big Buddha at sunset.
Jan 4 is free: a city day for EmQuartier, Thai silk at Jim Thompson, or a spa day. The Airport Rail Link runs from the Hyatt into town in about 30 minutes.
Each of us files a TDAC online at tdac.immigration.go.th within the 3 days before arrival, so between Dec 15 and Dec 18. It's free; ignore paid look-alike sites.
US passports need 6+ months of validity and blank pages. US citizens get visa-exempt entry for this length of stay.
December is cool and dry season. Chiang Mai mornings can be 55–60°F, so bring a light layer. Bangkok and Phuket run high 80s°F with sunshine.
Shoulders and knees covered. Pack a light scarf or sarong and slip-on shoes.
Cards work widely; carry some baht for markets and tips. An eSIM or the airport SIM counter makes Grab rides easy.
Reef-safe sunscreen, swimwear, insect repellent, a dressier outfit for New Year's Eve and the Mandarin Oriental, and adapters (Thai outlets take US flat-pin plugs).
